Did you know that the first ever Indian sound film, Alam Ara, was a love story. The history of love stories in Indian cinema can be traced back to the times of Alam Ara. The first ever sound film had be a love story, since it reaches a large audience in the first place. Love stories are such that each one of us will like them at a certain point, at least I believe that.

I have always been a fan of all things Bollywood. In a typical love story there is a touch of everything, from love at first sight to the rona-dhonas, to fight sequence for saving the heroine, and lastly the happy ending. Apart from that in the history of Hindi cinema, there are many such films that have experimented with different kind of stories and some have paid off and some have went down the drain.

Don't believe me that there are some really very strange scripts that have done tremendously good?

Read on.

Consider this, an eight year old waits every year for her dearest birthday gift that too a letter from his dead mother. At the age of eight her mother writes in the letter for her to make sure that his father is reunited with his best friend, who she thinks that was her first love. I think you may be getting a clue about which film I am describing, yes, its Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. At the first thought the story sounds extremely bizarre and trivial. Isn't it? But the presentation of the story in the film is such that it is one of the most famous romantic movies ever made.

There have been many other great Hindi romantic movies other than KKHH. So, let us have a look at the top 25 best Hindi romantic movies.

1| Pyaasa (1957)

I'm damn sure that you will definitely cry after watching this movie. The script is finely balanced with excellent and soul-stirring performance by Guru Dutt and Wahedaa Rehman. Talking about songs let me remind you that one of the most funniest, Sar Jo Tera Chakraye, belongs to one of the most emotional films. To me Pyaasa is the finest of all the movies in this list with a breathtaking script, great dialogues, and a mind-blowing climax.

2| Mughal-E-Azam (1960)

I mean who doesn't know about Mughal-E-Azam, a film which saw great collection at the box office when it was released for the first time and also when it was re-released in 2004 as a color version. Great movie and some most romantic songs.

3| Kashmir Ki Kali (1964)

I love this because of Shammi Kapoor and also my favorite actress, Sharmila Tagore is also part of this movie. Sharmila definitely looks like a Kashmir ki kali in this! Story of a rich guy loving a poor girl; with beautiful locations and songs. One such song with a beautiful location is lined up for you below. Watch the kali in action!

4| Silsila (1981)

Keep the tissue box near you before you start this movie, you'll need a lot of them. I mean what great movie, truly it can make you cry. The dialogues are recited even now in many movies and TV serials. Yes I am talking about Main aur meri Tanhayee.

5| Ek Duuje Ke Liye (1981)

Now if a movie like Silsila makes you cry then this will fill the buckets with your tears. Like many of us, I have also heard that after watching this movie many lovers sacrificed their lives just like Vasu and Sapna. I remember hearing it from the anchor of news channel NDTV that many died after watching this film. Other than that I don't have any other news-link to prove it. But that may very well be true.

The scene which invoked many of them is at the adjacent. Just watching the clip gives me shivers.

6| Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988)

One of the greatest hits of both Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla. A true mix of all things that a Bollywood movie can give us, exceptional songs makes it a must watch.

7| Maine Pyar Kiya (1989)

A movie that made Salman Khan a household name. I love this movie because of the girl-next-door act of Bhagyashree and the few comedy scenes that it has of Laxmikant Berde.

8| Dil (1990)

A romantic comedy movie again, bringing together Aamir Khan and Madhuri Dixit. This film might be one of those films that I first watched on T.V. Though a great movie which I would even love to watch in the midnight.

9| Saajan (1991)

The other day I heard on radio while coming back from work that the role of Sanjay Dutt was first offered to Aamir Khan, Ohhh...poor Aamir. I can't stop to mention that the soundtrack is just awesome and touches the heart.

10| Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1993)

A fun-filled romantic movie. A beleaguered Sunil (Shahrukh) does everything in and out of the book to win the trust and show love to Anna (Suchitra Krishnamoorthy) but Chris (Deepak Tijori) always has a upper hand.

A dialogue that I remember from it goes like this, "Idhar se jao, Udhar se jao sab rasta god ke paas jaata hai". Isn't that sensible and cute.

11| Hum Aapke Hain Kaun...! (1994)

A good mix of comedy and romance with emotional scenes. The story is very similar to Nadiya Ke Paar but I like this over the former so I have listed it here.

12| Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

Yes Its still running at Maratha Mandir in Mumbai as a morning show. One can still see lovebirds hand-in-hand lining up to buy tickets for this one. On major holidays like Holi many visit to watch this movie.

13| Raja Hindustani (1996)

An ultra-emotional movie. Muaah for Aamir-Karishma jodi.

14| Dil To Pagal Hai (1997)

A musical romantic movie starring the most romantic actor of Bollywood: Shahrukh Khan. I say that because Shahrukh is undoubtedly till now has had many box office hits which were from the romantic genre.

15| Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)

Again a Shahrukh starrer. Also with Kajol which is time and again touted as the most romantic pair of Bollywood.

If you weren't able to get your first love then there is no song that will cater better than this song: Tujhe Yaad Na Meri Aayi. Features Geeta Kapoor of the Dance India Dance fame at the start of the video.

16| Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999)

Again a classic movie. No need to tell you that this is the last movie that Salman and Aishwarya were seen together, and probably will remain the last featuring them. The song Tadap Tadap remains one of my personal favorites of KK (Krishnakumar Kunnath).

17| Dhadkan (2000)

An unusual combination of actors like Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty in a romantic movie. Both were mainly involved in doing action films back then.

Akshay awesomely pulls the character of a well-behaved person who goes by his ideals, and then Sunil Shetty's role of unforgettable lover makes this for a good watch.

18| Mohabbatein (2000)

The name itself is enough.

19| Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000)

Hrithik Roshan was an unknown face before the release of this movie. Clear example of getting famous overnight. For me, the movie gets more interested when the second Hrithik comes on screen.

20| Devdas (2002)

The story of Devdas has been taken from a novel of the same name written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Though a remake of the older version but as I haven't watched the older one I can't compare it. Liked the role of Jackie Shroff, Shahrukh, and Smita Jaykar (who played Deva's mother).

21| Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)

Bring the tissue boxes back!

22| Tere Naam (2003)

I am a big fan of this movie. Love this movie in every way. Cool songs, script, and Radhe Bhaiya is just awesome.

23| Veer-Zaara (2004)

A love story set with lovers from across the borders. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, was one other such film that is on the similar lines.

24| Love Aaj Kal (2009)

One of the few movies that I like of Saif Ali Khan. Not a keen observer of Saif's movies but this one gave me a pleasant surprise. Some very good songs and the first time actress Giselli Monteiro, the Brazilian model just looks great in Indian attire.

25| Band Baaja Baaraat (2010)

B3 gave Bollywood a new charmer: Ranbir Kapoor.

I'm afraid there aren't any good romantic movie to list for 2011. It may happen that I would have forgot a movie that you like, please leave a comment to let me know about your favorite movie and also take the below poll to let us know your favorite movie from the list.
