There are many situations in life where we get an opportunity to laugh, but considering the daily life of these 'modern times' we forget those moments or we hardly notice them. Many a time we laugh at those pre-determined times known as lunch-time in daily working life, that too once in a while.

Festivals are more of like shopping days and whatever little comedy shows that do air these days lack to give non-stop comedy like feeling. Still some are there which do provide tit-bits of laugh here and there. That is certainly not enough, serials like office office have became a thing of the past, which was like an epitome of perfect comic timing with an ingrained social message.

Likewise is the state of funny songs. Lyricist these days use abusive language in songs and label them as comedy songs (DK Bose qualifies for this statement). But let's not get in to the debate of Old vs New. Those were different times and today's scenario is different. People are enjoying it; demand-supply relationship, I guess.

The other day I was watching the weekend show on Times Now which featured some of the best old Hindi comedy songs of yesteryear. Thus was the birth of this hub. They showed around 9 -11 songs as for the time constraint which every program on TV has. Here on the net, we don't have any such time constraint, so I went ahead to compile a list of best 20 funny Hindi songs.

All these songs are excellently written and in one form or the other will give you a happy feeling. If the lyrics doesn't evoke the laughing gases in you then do watch the video and shake a leg with it.

So let's start with Lara Lappa Lara Lappa!

1| Lara Lappa Lara Lappa Layee Rakh Da - Ek Thi Ladki (1949)

The song which meant instant fame for Meena Shorey and her most remembered film, Ek Thi Ladki. As for the title the film also revolves much around the lead actress Meena Shorey (Khursheed Jehan, real name) where she shares the stage with legendary actors such as Motilal and Inderjeet Singh Johar .

This light-hearted funny Punjabi-Hindi song is one of my personal favorites just because of the lyrics and the free flowing tune and not to forget about Lata who the sung the song in the most polished way.

Meena Shorey's later years were of extreme poorness; if this song can be considered as the peak in her career then her reportedly begging at a Pakistani film function to marry her sister's daughter can be considered as the last ditch. She passed away in 1989 in a quiet, forgotten manner, and the burial took place by charity money.

Rest in Peace, Meena Shorey!

2| Bholi Soorat Dil Ke Khote - Albela (1951)

This song can't be labelled as a comedy song but still it is funny in its own way. The lyrics are one of the most meaningful songs considering the way of life is in this era.

The lyrics just overwhelms you and every word in it is just so true. And the tender dance steps or Bhagwan Dada seems to me that Amitabh Bachchan just took right from there and made his trademark dance step. Never mind if this statement seems a bit overstretched, and I am not a choreographer, just felt like saying it.

3| Jaane Kahan Mera Jigar Gaya Ji - Mr. & Mrs. '55 (1955)

The song picturised on Johnny Walker and Vinita Bhatt (better known as Yasmin in Bollywood circles) during the lunch break of their office time.

Do we need any other thing than Johnny Walker to make a song funny?

Sung by Geeta Bali and Mohammad Rafi this is a fun love song. The lyrics scores better than the music and infuses a sense of intrigue that is actually sweet as the song proceeds.

4| Sar Jo Tera Chakraaye - Pyaasa (1957)

The legendary song from a legendary film. The film which is just awesome and on a serious subject. But the song doesn't feels out of the place at all and actually brings a balance to the whole film.

Even after more than five decades the songs of this movie is rhymed and is an inspiration to many lyricist and composers. So much so that the songs of the movie also got an award from the British Film Institute in 2004 for its heart-touching songs.

And Sar Jo Tera Chakraaye : A True Lyrical Masterpiece.

5| Eena Meena Deeka - Aasha (1957)

Touted as the first rock and roll number of the Hindi Cinema. Now isn't that some trivia for all you Bollywood buffs. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar.

It is known that the song was inspired by a group of small children that were playing outside music composer C Ramachandra's studio. That was the standard of creativity of C Ramachandra; he just created the song out of thin air and made it so beautiful.

The lyrics was completed by Rajendra Krishnan but the initial words were from the creative minds of CR. He is also one of the few music directors who has composed music for different languages like Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Bhojpuri, and Telugu.

6| Main Bambai Ka Babu - Naya Daur (1957)

This fun number comes from the vocal chords of Rafi and particularly brings to mind the face of Johnny Walker.

Undoubtedly one of the first songs on Bambai/Bombay.

Just watch the video to take full advantage of the song.

Look at how JW dances in his gentle steps and makes believe Dilip Kumar and Vyjanthimala about his newly gotten status of him being a Bambai Ka Babu.

7| Hum The Woh Thi - Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958)

One of the many songs that made Kishore Kumar the legend that he is today. The tempo of the song is not that fast and not that slow, it's just perfect for the setting.

There is just something of Kishore Kumar that brings smile on our faces especially when he is on screen.

Also the film went on to become a hit, and do I need to say its a comedy movie considering Kishore Kumar acted in it?

8| Hum Kaale Hai To Kya Hua - Gumnaam (1965)

Yet again a serious film and a fun number. Mehmood is a maestro with unmatched skills and brings life to all his performance.

To me he is the first comedian of the Indian cinema. Do you agree?

This song:

One of the best of Mahmood!

One of the best of Helen!

One of the best of Mohammad Rafi!

9| O Meri Maina Tu Maan Le Mera Kehna - Pyaar Kiye Jaa (1966)

You must watch the video of this song for some hilarious laugh. The free flowing dance of Mumtaz and Mehmood just adds to the flare of the song.

The film did well at the Box Office (Gross Earnings : 1,70,00,000) and Mehmood got the filmfare award for the best comedian in 1966 for this movie.

10| Bade Miyan Deewane Aise Na Bano - Shaagird (1967)

Want to impress or to learn how to get a girlfriend or want some basic tips to impress your girlfriend. Then this song is for all you guys who are single and ready to mingle.

The film sports I.S. Johar as a professor who is bachelor and Joy Mukherjee is his student in college. The crux of the film lies in this song. The film is about changing a bachelor's mind and agreeing him to marry finding a suitable match; so is the lyrics of this song.

His (I.S Johar) student (Joy Mukherjee) takes the mantle on himself and tries to find his professor a suitable match (Saira Banu). Its a comedy movie wherein finally Saira Banu actually starts to like Joy rather than Johar.

11| Ek Chatur Naar - Padosan (1968)

Firstly as a big fan of this movie let me tell you this is one of the movie that has it all: Love, Comedy, and a touch of uncertainty.

If you have already watched this movie then go on and enjoy this beautiful movie once again. And this song is just one moment where in the viewers go berserk in excitement.

Such an awesome song once again from Kishore Kumar!.

12| Meri Bhains Ko Danda Kyun Maara - Pagla Kahin Ka (1970)

Song with an unmatched performance by none other than Shammi Kapoor. This energetic performance by SK does gets listeners to shake a leg.

The movie is also very good and is a story of a guy (Shammi Kapoor) who lands up in a mental asylum for the want of love and friendship. Watch the movie to find out how? You won't be disappointed after watching this movie which has a rare combination of actors such as Prem Chopra, Aasha Parekh, Helen, and of course Shammi Kapoor.

13| Do Bechare Bina Sahare - Victoria No. 203 (1972)

The trademark song of the movie which brings to our front a look of a disgruntled Pran and Ashok Kumar looking for keys of a lock.

This film also brought to the fore the versatility of actors such as Pran and Ashok Kumar, who were known to play only serious roles. The music created by Kalyanji Anandji was a hit and the movie a super-hit according to box office reports.

14| Muthu Kodi Kawari Hada - Do Phool (1973)

Another song where Mahmood takes the cake, and tries to kiss Rama Prabha (well-known for her Telugu films); I can say so because as a South Indian (Tamil) I can tell you the meaning of the song's first sentence, the rest being in Hindi is easily understood.

The song's first sentence roughly translates to Give a Kiss Dear for Muthu Kodi Kawari Hada. Where Muthu means Kiss, Kodi means Give, and the rest two words are included just that they rhyme well with the song.

15| Saa Re Gaa Maa Geet Pehle Bana Tha - Chupke Chupke (1975)

A landmark film in the lives of people who were associated with this film. Right from the leading actors like Amitabh, Dharamji, Sharmila Tagore, to the director (Hrishikesh Mukherjee) went on to garner tremendous praise from the general public and Bollywood critics.

This also went on to start a trend known as the Hrishikesh Mukherjee style of films like some of the off-beat comedy movies which had actors such as Farooq Shaikh, Amol Palekar and some times Naseerudin Shah.

The song, if you consider is not that funny but the chumminess of the Amitabh and Dharmendra is just first-class, not to forget the unusual laugh of Sharmila Tagore at the end of this video.

The film has some excellent characters and performance by all the actors.

I bet you must have seen this movie, so let's remind you of some of the characters in this movie so that you laugh by imagining some of the scenes of the flick.

Famous Characters:

  • Professor Parimal Tripathi - Dharmendra
  • Sulekha Chaturvedi - Sharmila Tagore
  • Raghvendra - Om Prakash
  • Sukumar Sinha - Amitabh Bachchan
  • PK Srivastava - Asrani
  • Vasudha - Jaya Bachchan

16| My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves - Amar Akbar Anthony (1977)

Listening this song brings back fond memories of my childhood. Most probably one of the first films that I have watched.

The super-actor of the millennium - Amitabh Bachchan - at his very best. The opening lines of the song is in English where AB speaks almost nonstop and the song is actually sung by the great Kishore Kumar.

The opening Lines are:

"You See The Whole Country Of The System,

Is Juxtaposition By The Hemoglobin In The Atmosphere,

Because You Are Sophisticated Rhetorician,

Intoxicated By The Exuberance Of Your Own Publicity."

Also the music of the film is just awesome.

Other songs of this movie.

  • Anhony ko honi
  • Shirdi Wale
  • Tayyab Ali
  • Humko Tumse
  • Parda Hai Parda

17| Golmaal Hai Bhai Sab Golmaal Hai - Gol Maal (1979)

Yes indeed, Golmaal Hai Bhai Sab Golmaal Hai.

18| Thande Thande Pani Se Nahana Chahiye - Pati Patni Aur Woh (1978)

Frankly until recent times I didn't even knew that this song is picturized on Sanjeev Kumar.

Sanjeev Kumar was known for his character acting and has done roles in possibly every genre. This movie Pati Patni Aur Woh and Angoor were excellent comedy movies of him.

19| Khaike Pan Banaraswala - Don (1978)

Yet another song of the superstar which I and also you might have listened hundred or more times, isn't it?.

People are still remaking such songs in the name of remixes and earning money from the magic created by Kalyanji-Anandji. I just don't get the point of remaking older films be it Don or Agneepath, be it good or bad.

20| Mere Angane Mein - Laawaris (1981)

Mere Angane Mein is just a special song.

So much so that the song became more popular that the movie got known by this song and the mannerism of Amitabh.

Special Mention

Ram Dulari Maike Gayi - Meri Biwi Ki Shaadi (1979)

I was absolutely sure to include this song but as I was listing the songs from the oldest to the less older songs. Including this song meant to sacrifice one song from any of the last four song which was not an ideal thing.

So, this song is just a bonus and after listening this you won't question once. Sung by Suresh Wadkar who usually is best known for his sad songs. Also this is the second Hindi movie of Ashok Saraf before which he acted in some Marathi movies.

The song belongs to a relatively forgettable film of Amol Palekar, but as a fan of Amol Palekar's acting I knew about this song and this film. The film is a comedy film of a different kind. Really different but a little slow in its pace.

For me this were the best Hindi songs that brought smiles when I heard them.

I hope that you too liked reading this hub and watching the videos.
